Roberto Sergio, recently appointed
CEO of Rai state broadcaster by Italy's rightwing government, on
Saturday stressed the importance of electoral equal-time
provisions amid a row over the live coverage of a local-election
rally in Sicily by Premier Giorgia Meloni.
Rai issued a statement saying that "with regard to the
controversy surrounding the live broadcast of the rally from
Catania, Rai announces that Rai's Chief Executive Officer,
Roberto Sergio, was promptly informed and contacted the director
of Rai News 24 to reiterate the importance of correct
representation of the political debate."
It said the editor of the rolling all-news station had pointed
out that the channel had given "ample space throughout the day
to all of Italy's political forces".
