The government will name a
commissioner for relief and reconstruction after the deadly and
disastrous Emilia-Romagna floods at the right time, Deputy
Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Saturday after
reports that the rightwing League party had blocked the
appointment of the region's centre-left Governor Stefano
Bonaccini and amid reports that the new official should be a
technocrat reporting directly to Premier Giorgia Meloni.
"We will appoint the commissioner at the appropriate time, now
we need to deal with the emergency issue, you have seen what is
also happening from the health point of view. We will do
whatever it takes", Tajani said in Naples, also referring to
health moves including tetanus jabs amid dangerous tainting of
the flood waters in the northern region.
The floods claimed 15 lives and caused billions of euros in
damage to property and crops.
