There will be 14 operas in the next
season at La Scala, including the return of Bellini's Norma
after 48 years and the world premiere of The Name of the Rose
from the Umberto Eco novel, according to the roster presented to
the opera house's unions by Superintendent Dominique Meyer
Wednesday.
The opening night will see La Forza del destino conducted by
Riccardo Chailly, the musical director who will be on the podium
also for the reprise of the Weil Triptych and two concerts of
the symphonic season.
The presence of Daniele Gatti, who returns to conduct opera
(Falstaff) after 7 years and will be on the podium for the
Christmas concert and a performance with the Dresder
Staatskapelle, will also be strong.
La Scala's season opens on St Ambrose's Day on December 7,
Milan's patron saint.
