The cabinet on Wednesday upheld the
proposal of Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano and awarded the
Calabrian town of Taurianova the title of Italian Book Capital
2024, a statement from the premier's office at Palazzo Chigi has
said.
"The proclamation has been made on the basis of the unanimous
decision of the jury, because the (project) proposal represents
an improvement of the cultural offer" in the town on the Gioia
Tauro plain and "can constitute a pedagogical workshop and a
laboratory of cultural, civil and social redemption," the
statement added.
The municipalities of Trapani in Sicily, Grottaferrata in Lazio,
San Mauro Pascoli in Emilia Romagna and Tito in Basilicata,
which were also in the running for the title of Italian Book
Capital 2024, had asked for the award procedure to be suspended
after Sangiuliano announced the jury decision in February.
Established in 2020, the title of Italian Book Capital aims to
promote a culture of reading and books.
Cities are selected by a jury nominated by the culture ministry
on the basis of project proposals and the winners receive up to
500,000 euro in funding.
In 2021 the title was awarded to Vibo Valentia in Calabria, in
2022 to Ivrea in Piemonte and in 2023 to Genoa in Liguria.
