A 73-year-old Puglia man graduated in
medicine at a Naples university earlier this week 54 years after
starting the course and then dropping out.
Enzo Fernando Buccoliero commissioned a coach to bring his
friends, grandchildren and great grandchildren from Sava near
Taranto to see him get his degree in medicine and surgery at
Vanvitelli University Tuesday.
"It is an exemplary story of resilience," said his rapporteur
Professor Antonio Gallo after Buccoliero, who had remained on
the university roll for the 54 years, discussed his thesis on
Parkinson's.
The new graduate told reporters "my brother was graduating in
literature here in Naples, and he got me to enroll. Then life
got in the way".
