The director of the Colosseum on
Thursday slammed Sunday's Rome marathon for blocking tourists
and stopping them getting in at their booked times as well as
causing slight damage to the ancient Roman amphitheatre.
The official, Alfonsina Russo, wrote to the organisers of the
Run Rome The Marathon, to Infront Italy and the mayor of Rome,
Roberto Gulatieri, to protest about obstacles to staff and
public access, with tourists unable to reach the entrance gates
at the booked time, which on the one hand caused the strict rota
to be broken, leading to an accumulation of visitors, and on the
other to a cut in the number of visitors estimated at between 2
and 3 thousand.
She also complained about episodes of 'vandalism' and
'degradation' caused by the absence of fixed garrisons to clean
the areas.
